Portugal to Launch New “Skilled Work Seeking Visa” for Foreign Applicants
Portugal is preparing to introduce a brand-new visa category for foreign nationals, aiming to attract qualified professionals from around the world. The upcoming “Skilled Work Seeking Visa” will replace the previous Work Seeking Visa, offering improved opportunities for skilled job seekers.
According to reports from The Portugal News, cited by The Economic Times, this new visa policy is expected to create significant opportunities for international candidates hoping to build a career in Portugal.
The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all appointments under the old Work Seeking Visa were cancelled starting 23 October. As a result, Portuguese consulates and visa centers operated by VFS Global and BLS International are no longer accepting applications under the previous category.
Authorities have stated that the rollout process for the Skilled Work Seeking Visa has already begun. However, the visa will officially take effect only after the final rules and regulations under Portugal’s updated foreign employment law are published.
This major policy shift aligns with Law 61/2025, issued in Portugal’s official gazette on 22 October 2025. Under the new system, applicants with recognized qualifications, specialized expertise, or professional skills will receive priority during the selection process.
At present, all consulates and partner organizations have suspended services related to the older Work Seeking Visa. The government of Portugal will soon release detailed guidelines regarding eligibility requirements and the official start date for submitting applications under the new visa category.
